It is the 1980s, and the people who live in the townhouses belong to the new group of officials that had developed over a few prosperous decades. They are materially secure. The exteriors are well-polished. The children are whole, clean, and well-behaved, symbolizing the good life. In the five houses live nine people. They know each other well, and they socialize frequently. But soon, they become aware of how fragile their existence is, and life in the terraced row will never be more like Elisabeth, Torsten, Henry, Kristina, and all the other neighbors.
