Prunella Scales, beloved British actress best known for her role as Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, has died peacefully at home in London at the age of 93.

Prunella Scales, born Prunella Margaret Rumney Illingworth on June 22, 1932, in Sutton Abinger, Surrey, leaves behind a nearly 70-year legacy in stage, film, and television. Her death on October 27, 2025, was confirmed by her sons, Samuel and Joseph West, who shared that she passed peacefully, surrounded by love, and had watched Fawlty Towers the day before she died.

A Career of Wit and Depth Scales began her acting journey in the 1950s, with early roles in Pride and Prejudice (1952) and Hobson’s Choice (1954). Her breakout television role came in Marriage Lines (1961–1966), opposite Richard Briers. But it was her portrayal of Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers (1975, 1979) that cemented her place in British comedy history. With razor-sharp timing and a commanding presence, she transformed Sybil from a caricature into a richly layered character, earning praise from co-creator John Cleese and audiences worldwide.

Scales was a versatile performer, equally at home in drama and comedy. She starred as Elizabeth Mapp in Mapp & Lucia (1985), and played Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett’s A Question of Attribution, earning a BAFTA nomination. Her stage work included Shakespearean roles and a one-woman show as Queen Victoria, performed over 400 times.

A Life of Love and Adventure. In later years, Scales charmed viewers alongside her husband, actor Timothy West, in Great Canal Journeys. This travel documentary series candidly depicted her life with vascular dementia. Their 61-year marriage was a testament to enduring love and mutual respect. West passed away in November 2024.

Scales was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1992 for her services to drama. Her portrayal of strong, intelligent women helped shape British television and inspired generations of performers.

She is survived by her sons, Samuel and Joseph, her stepdaughter, Juliet West, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Her wit, warmth, and indelible performances will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come.
